Wow, so the 'Kessler Effect' is pretty damn serious! I write mostly about advertising, and occasionally science & technology when it relates to new developments such as 3D printing and Augmented Reality. And this stuff is really, really cool, and we presume with little doubt that it will emerge one day. Just look at the film Minority Report and how futuristic it was back in 2002, but yet in 10 short years, most of that technology is real today. Most of these new technologies rely on a backbone of communication which includes a need for satellites - a lot of them. And that's not a problem right? They are so easy to build now that amateurs have started to do so, and find ways to launch them into low orbit. Well, the Kessler Effect (or Kessler Syndrome) might change your thinking. It was proposed by Donald J. Kessler back in 1978 whilst he was a scientist at NASA. In brief, the Kessler Effect says that there will be so much 'stuff' up in orbit that eventually collisions will start to occur, and those will cause more 'stuff' to be in orbit, which will lead to more collisions... The opposing theory of there being so much space that collisions are extremely unlikely, is now looking pretty weak when you start to look at maps that track all the satellites - and garbage - that floats around in our 'little' orbit. It is reported by the United States Space Surveillance Network (SSN) that there are some 3,000 satellites orbiting the Earth today, and a further 5,000 other man made objects (mostly garbage leftover from our space activities) up there too - and that's only the stuff over 4 inches in size! A tiny piece of junk travelling at 20,000 MPH could destroy a satellite or the International Space Station (ISS) quite easily, or certainly puncture a hole big enough to give astronauts serious worries. And in fact, the SSN has tracked nearly 25,000 pieces of debris in its time, with most now having burnt up in the atmosphere, or fallen to Earth. What made this all very real for me was a trip to the Science Museum in London with my kids. They were watching a video of satellites orbiting the Earth and simply couldn't believe it; and I don't blame them, if you do get to see it, it is quite astonishing what we have done in the short 60 years since Russia launched the first Sputnik. And so I started to look into this problem, and discovered that Kessler was quite right. In February 2009, two satellites collided at over 24,000 MPH. One was an active communications device, and the other a defunct Russian Space Forces unit, deactivated back in 1995. Of deep concern is the report from SSN that over 2,000 pieces of additional space debris measuring over 4 inches were created from the impact, and a countless number of smaller pieces. Without wanting to sound alarmist, all of those pieces are now also in orbit ready to cause the next collision, which in turn will create thousands more pieces of debris, which in turn... will prove Kessler right. All this debris causes real concern. Space launches have to be planned around it, satellites maneuvered to avoid it, and in March of this year, one large piece caused the residents of the ISS to take shelter in their escape pod until it had passed. And we are talking about objects 4 inches small that is thousands of miles away and happen to be moving at incredible speeds, and so accurate tracking is almost impossible. Indeed, it was estimated that the two satellites in 2009 that collided would actually miss each other by 584 metres! Some scientists are concerned that Kessler will be proved right on a grand scale, and that we will have so much debris in space soon that we will be limited in the number of satellites we can use successfully, and that manned space missions may be cancelled for several generations whilst we wait for all that garbage to burn up.

Save the Butterflies

Are you sick of rainy days? This so-called July weather? Is it dampening your spirits and killing the social calendar? Is it threatening your species? If the answer to the last question is yes, then you are one of the butterflies that feature in this article, if not then you're like me - just another malcontent, fed up with British weather. Butterflies are one of the few purely decorative insects you can attract and their variety of colours is astonishing, thus making them a welcome addition to any garden, but, due to last years wet summer, and the continuing trend this year, Britain has seen a severe decline in several species of butterfly. As most of us know, water and wings don't mix, particularly where insects are concerned. A heavy rainstorm is comparable to a blitzkrieg from a butterflys perspective and all this rotten weather has meant they've been less actively pollinating and breeding. As such, last weeks article on pond cultivation comes closer to the fore, due to it's role as an insect habitat. The obvious plus is the water source it provides, however, butterflies require peace to flourish, so I'd also suggest a wild patch in your garden that will remain undisturbed by usual garden maintenance and thus provide them with a breeding ground. To this end, you might consider a small nettle patch as this will discourage human contact whilst providing a suitable habitat. The primary means of enticing butterflies into the garden depends on your planting, because nectar is primarily what will invite them. To ensure the most hospitable environment, you'll want a variety of plants that will provide nectar year round, so it is advised you have a balance of spring bloomers such as Daisies, Dandelions, Pansies and Primroses and to compensate their loss in late summer and autumn, a healthy dose of Marigolds, Knapweed and Lavender. Other examples to really boost your butterfly potential are full sun perennials such as Helenium, which will provide bold colour and a large bulbous landing pad to your guests, Lathyrus which offers a daintier foliage and the bonus for us of scent, and the towers of Verbascum, which will dominate the sky line of a butterfly garden - the air traffic control on your own living airfield. Shrubs that butterflies love include Buddleia, Hebes and Lilac and certain herbs also attract the insect, due to their scent. These include oregano, thyme and mint. It is important to remember that your butterfly population will be relative to your gardening variety i.e. the greater the number and mix and plants, the greater the potential for their propagation. Due to their erratic behaviour, butterfly spotting is no simple task, however, look out in your own gardens for species like the Common Blue with their lilac veined wings and white trim, the flambouyant Peacock with big blue eyes on its wings, or the small Tortoiseshell, tiger striped with segmented blue edging, to know just how much your helping their species. Other, threatened, types to watch out for are the toffee coloured Small Skipper, the Ginger Lulworth Skipper, Chalk Hill Blue and the Wall Brown species.

Creative Memory Scrapbooking is a Wonderful New Art

For centuries the art of scrapbooking has been kept alive because we all love mementos and souvenirs of our past. We all like taking photos of our friends and our families because very often we do not get to spend as much time as we would like with them. Creative memories scrapbooking is a wonderful way of keeping these special occasions alive. It is a way of capturing the treasured moments you spend together in a personal photographic journal that you can make as decorative as you like. Very often all our photographs stay in boxes or drawers because we never seem to have the time to sort through them. Some of our favourite ones may get framed or put into albums which then just stay on a bookshelf gathering dust. But photos often depict milestones in our lives. These photos are often taken during important occasions such as weddings, christenings and birthday parties. Scrapbooking has become one of the nicest hobbies for people to do when they are at home and creative memory scrapbooking means that all those old photos can now be retrieved from the boxes and drawers to be sorted and reminisced over in the nicest of possible ways. It is a very therapeutic pass time which keeps memories alive for the whole family to enjoy and appreciate. This whole concept of scrapbooking is an inventive approach to making sure nothing is ever forgotten. Scrapbooks are far nicer than simple photo albums because you can make them into beautifully decorative books which have your own very personal touch to them. These books tell the world exactly who you are and how you express yourself. This is all achieved in the manner in which you create your personal scrapbook. Your treasured moments are there for all to see on the pages you have personally made and creative memory scrapbooks suddenly have a life of their own, with memories of times long past suddenly jumping out of the pages at everyone who views them. The great part about it all is that you can add text to each of the pages, so that your story is not only visual but written as well. Each of the pages will lead to the next in a wonderful way if you plan it well. To create a memory scrapbook is easy these days. Just by going on the Internet you will be able to find all the tools and materials you would ever need to start off doing this lovely and creative hobby. Just by looking around your own home, you will find simple mementos and decorations which you can use to embellish your scrapbook. This is how they use to create scrapbooks in times long past. We are lucky to have so much at our disposal, but it is always nicer to mix what you find yourself with things you find either in a craft store or on the Internet. You can create a very personal scrapbook by doing just this instead of just using prepared ready to use items. But if you are stuck for decorations or need extra embellishments to add that little bit extra to your scrapbook, you will find a treasure trove of goodies by going on the Internet. There are websites which specialise in scrapbooking and they offer some great ideas as well as supplying materials and kits which help get you started. Once you have created one scrapbook, you are well on your way to creating another because it is such a fun thing to do. Your children will love to be a part of the project and it will encourage them to use their imaginations and give you ideas on how to go about decorating your book. A well kept scrapbook is an heirloom. It is a family legacy that generations to come will enjoy leafing through. It is something that you will enjoy creating, it will preserve your memories perfectly and it is a way of passing a little bit of yourself to those who come after you in one of the nicest art forms you can create.

‎"PATTERN CHANGE of CIVIL SERVICES EXAMINATION"

invites all the students to participate in a forum discussion on UPSC Civil Services Examination's anticipated pattern change.... Recently, UPSC delayed its notification of Civil Services Exam-2013 which has further increased speculations for change in the pattern. The present structure of the Civil Services Examination (CSE) is based on the recommendations made by the Kothari Committee,1976 (with minor modifications made by the Satish Chandra Committee,1989). Given the inadequacies of the present system, the Alagh Committee recommended in 2001 for the replacement of optional subjects with a set of three compulsory papers on: (a) Sustainable Development and Social Justice, (b) Science and Technology in Society, and (c) Democratic Governance, Public Systems and Human Rights. It said "The curriculum and the general objectives of each compulsory subject would be designed to bring out the issues or the problems which the civil services would need to address." The Second ARC in 2008 in its 10th report "REFURBISHING OF PERSONNEL ADMINISTRATION" agreed with the conclusions reached by the Alagh Committee. It was recommended that the Preliminary Examination should consist of an objective type test having one or two papers on general studies. The Main Examination should consist of conventional type compulsory papers dealing with the Constitution of India, the Indian legal system, Indian economy, polity, history and culture etc. Further, the Commission was of the view that sufficient lead time may be provided to the prospective candidates for the civil services from the date of acceptance of these recommendations. ___________________________________________________ So, the change in pattern of Civil Service Exam has been due for a long time. This delay has been because of numerous factors attached to the complexities in bringing a pattern change and its impact on the preparation by prospective candidates. We invite the views of the prospective Candidates here at okkal.com to generate a fruitful opinion regarding anticipated PATTERN CHANGE of Civil Services Exam. You may give your views on following questions, which are already there in every candidate's mind : Is Pattern Change necessary? What should be the new Structure of Civil Services Exam? Should Optionals be dropped? Which compulsory papers should be there to justify the present needs of administration? Should the 'pattern change' be implemented urgently or delayed further? What would be the impact on diversified composition of Civil Services- Selected Candidates' List? How would it change administration and promote good governance? What should be the special provisions for candidates? ...and so on You may also try to generate your own questions & then give your views on them. We need to reach a concrete OPINION which may satisfy the demands of GOOD GOVERNANCE in administration along with due CARE for prospective candidates. LETS BEGIN..!!!

Bible Study On Revelations 18 - The Judgment Of Babylon

A study of the eighteenth chapter of the book of Revelations shows that the day is coming when Babylon will be punished for her misdeeds that brings calamity upon the world on account of the great apostasy into which its inhabitants will be led. As we seek to connect the dots in the book of Revelations concerning the succession of world events we need to get a better understanding of the role of Babylon in the fulfillment of end-time prophecies. The first hint of Babylon's involvement in last-day events is found in Revelation 14:8. In this particular verse it is said that Babylon has made all nations drunk with the wine of her fornication. In order for us to determine the meaning of the phrase 'wine of her fornication' we need to determine who this Babylon is. In my Bible study on Revelation 17 I see where Babylon is again mentioned under the symbol of a woman. The clear biblical interpretation of this 'woman' symbol is said to be "that great city that reigneth over the kings of the earth" (Rev. 17:18), and sits on seven mountains (Rev. 17;9). Furthermore, in the scriptures woman in symbolic form usually refers to a religious entity (a church, see Jer. 6:3; Eph. 5:21-27). The woman, Mystery Babylon the great, is obviously an impure religion since she is categorized as a whore. And this is what explains the fornication part. Since the woman is a symbol, her fornication cannot be seen as literal; it must also be accounted as symbolic. She commits fornication by departing from her Lord and went a whoring after other gods just as Israel did in days of old (Exod. 34:16; Ezek. 6:9). As we examine each description as well as the biblical solution to the symbol, we can only be led to one conclusion - this great city that sits on seven mountains is none other than the city of Rome and her religion. Like Jerusalem, Mystery Babylon was once a faithful city but she has now become a harlot (Isa. 1:21). As a harlot she will lead the world into the same kind of prostitution of which she is accused, and hence, the world will suffer the same punishment that will be meted out against her for such an offense. But she will not be punished just for her apostasy because she is not just a participant or a mere victim in this whole end-time saga. Even a peripheral Bible study on Revelations 14, 16, 17, and 18 will show clearly that this woman will be very much at the helm dictating world affairs. According to Revelation 17, she will reign over kings and will make the inhabitants of the earth drunk with the wine of her fornication. The eighteenth chapter of the book of Revelation outlines the details of her sins for which she will be rewarded and manner of her retribution. When we consider the extent of divine judgment upon this city of fornication it can only lead us to contemplate the magnitude of her offenses. Certainly, God does not impose punishment more than what the crime deserves. It is interesting to note the manner in which she will be punished. If we should only confine our Bible study about Mystery Babylon to Revelation 14 alone we may be lead to conclude that God will personally cause fire and brimstone to fall upon that seven-hill city for its iniquity. But based on what we read in Revelation 17, the destruction of Babylon will be the work of the ten kings. At some point these ten co-rulers with the beast (Rev. 17:12) will have reason to turn against her. A Bible study on Revelation 17 will bear out the fact, "these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire." Rev. 17:16. Indeed, God's judgment will be executed upon Babylon at the hands of her own allies (Rev. 17:17).

Protect Natural Resources, Utilize Solar Electric Power

Solar energy, wind energy, geothermal energy, hydropower and biomass are some of the renewable sources of energy. Using of renewable sources of energy is good because these sources offer an environmentally friendly option than utilizing fossil fuels. There will be an improve energy security and energy independence if people use renewable source of energy. Also renewable sources of energy are the cleanest and safest energy sources. The well-known source of energy which is the solar energy is an environment-friendly and endless renewable source of energy. Solar power doesn't result in the emission of harmful carbon dioxide unlike the use of fossil fuels. The sun will be the unlimited source of energy and with right technologies can provide sufficient electricity that could be used in every single household or even in commercial and industrial properties. The use of solar power has a positive effect in the environment because taking advantage of solar energy does not contribute to climate change, acid rains or any kind of pollution. When transformed from solar radiations, solar energy may possibly be converted to thermal energy or electric power. This may also be employed in a number of applications like in agriculture and analysis. At present, solar power is being utilized in two areas namely for the production of thermal energy which can heat up water and producing of electric power by utilizing the photovoltaic cell. Photovoltaic cells or PV cells captures solar energy then transforming it into electricity. These cells convert sunlight into electricity by employing the energy developed when photons from sunlight push electrons into greater state of energy. Yet solar power is not only limited to thermal energy and electricity simply because currently, numerous devices which are powered by solar energy exist in the market. Solar energy is an excellent source of supplying power to homes and companies and by utilizing solar power you're not merely protecting the environment from becoming polluted but also you are saving the rest of the earths natural resources. Capturing solar energy does not contribute any pollution and does not harm the atmosphere. One of the factors why many individuals are still hesitant to make use of solar power is because it is expensive. The initial investment of installing solar power system for a home is expensive and aside from that solar power still wants to boost its deficiency. The need of big location of space is another reason why people aren't taking into consideration solar power.

Environmentally Friendly Ways of Reusing and Recycling Paper, Books and Mags

As consumers demand the need for more paper, whether it's for newspapers, plain paper or books, we continue to cut down vast numbers of really old trees. It will take numerous years to see this turned over. Reusing and recycling paper is really important nowadays. All paper, including books and magazines, are virtually wholly biodegradable, meaning they don't clog landfills for many years and will merely degrade into nothing. The fact that there is a need for more paper makes it appear daft not to recycle as much as we possibly can. That is why we should reuse and recycle. The traditional means of recycling paper is by making use of recycling facilities. You will observe that where you dwell, there are opportunities to recycle, including in numerous cases your local grocery store. You may notice that your local area has different bins so you can sort your paper for recycling. So that the paper can be usable once again, the recycling process should be put in place. This saves the trees and makes for a healthy environment. Paper recycling is not always straightforward and can be made challenging by the stapling of books and mags. Magnets may be utilized to handle the problems of metal and recycling companies are constantly try to find ways to better the process. Mags and books can be reused, it is only a matter of using our imagination. Those old books and magazines are a fantastic learning resource for your kids and they will have the chance to give them to other people in the future. An old book will be of use to somebody else and it is not hard for us give it this way. There are always places like libraries that are happy to take your old books from you. Some libraries will take donations of old books and even magazines, providing they are in good condition. The library and the public will be more glad since they will have more reading choices. So instead of merely tossing a book or leaving it to collect dust, think about giving it to a library. Books can also be sold instead of given away either locally or online. EBay and Amazon are popular places online where you can try selling your old books. To sum it up, paper is being utilized more and more but fewer trees. Beasts use trees as a natural home ground and they are essential for the wellbeing of the environment. There are plenty of choices for us to recycle paper and to ensure that books and magazines are reused instead of thrown away.
